Who we are

Obscurist is a free daily word game run by [name of the person running Obscurist], who is responsible for your data. Questions or requests: [contact email].

What we keep

  • Your email address, to send you login links. It's never shown to other players.
  • Your nickname, if you choose one, for the leaderboard.
  • The word you play each day, with when you played it and its score.
  • A short-lived record of word checks, to stop anyone testing thousands of words. Each one is deleted after a day.

That's all. We don't ask for your name, age, phone number or location, and there are no ads, analytics or tracking.

What other players see

  • Nothing about today's game until it's scored the next day.
  • After that, logged-in players can see your nickname, word, score and rank on that day's leaderboard. So don't use your real name as a nickname.
  • The day's rarest words are shown without saying who played them.
  • Without a nickname, you don't appear on leaderboards. You can leave the leaderboard at any time on the Account page, which removes you from past ones too.

Why we use it

To run the game you signed up for: logging you in, saving your word, scoring it and showing results. The word-check records protect the game from abuse. We never sell your data or use it for marketing.

Who stores it

  • Supabase stores the database and handles logins.
  • Vercel hosts the website.
  • An email provider sends the login links.

They only process your data for us, to run the game.

Cookies and your device

One cookie keeps you logged in; the game can't work without it. Your browser also remembers a few settings on your device, like dark mode and today's letter order. These never leave your device.

How long we keep it

For as long as you have an account. Deleting your account removes your email, nickname and every word you've played straight away (copies in routine backups expire on their own). Past leaderboards keep their player counts, but nothing that identifies you.

Your rights

  • Delete your account at any time on the Account page.
  • Change your email, or ask for a copy of your data, by emailing [contact email].
  • If you're unhappy with how we handle your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.

Changes

If this policy changes, the date at the top changes too.
